Stop Barking Dogs
Dog Barking – Just a Nuisance?
Most people like dogs some way or the other. I mean, how can you not be attached to those furry, playful and social creatures?
However, there are certain dogs — or should I rather say certain dog activities — that we don’t care too much about. One of them is being the nuisance dog barking from your neighbor’s, or your own, beloved canine.
A barking dog is far from being "just a nuisance". Recently, a health insurance investigation did reveal that the sound of a continually barking dog was cited as the most stress inducing and disruptive noise for humans.
Two scientific surveys with dog owners showed that approximately 1/3 of them reported their dogs barked excessively.
So it is only natural that we some times really want to shout out loud: "Stop barking dogs now please!" when we’re being interrupted in our much needed sleep, or while trying to concentrate on doing our vital homework assignment.
It is very easy to blame the poor creature. However, we must realize that barking, as well as whining, howling and growling, is part of their normal and natural communication and behavior. Dogs bark form time to time, it’s as simple as that.
Barking can be a sign of a dog protecting its territory; it can be attention-seeking, exertion of dominance, or indeed an expression of some other sort of need. This type of communication is a natural trait, and can not be considered a true problem behavior. That is: until it is being done in excess. Simply put, if a dog is not being allowed to bark at all, you’re really trying to fight nature…
One quite frequent problem is dogs barking at joggers, mail carriers, cars or bicycles on the street. These creatures will inevitably have their barking reinforced naturally. The dog sees the jogger, he barks, and the jogger runs away. "Isn’t this great", the dog might think, "My barking works – this person took off. Yeah, I’ll definitely do more of that!"
Anyways — whatever the reason might be — you have this severe and annoying dog barking problem and you need to alleviate it before you turn into a raving maniac. One thing that will not help at all is shouting. That goes for shouting No!, in particular. The dog might even think you’re barking too… So shouting is a no, no.
Punishing the dog? For what? For being a dog? Let’s face it, excessive barking is an owner problem really, not a dog problem. Physical punishment will do nothing more than making your dog fearful and afraid of you – breaking down the vital and natural bond you need to have. At least, if you want to adjust the behavior, you must do it as it occurs. Trying to take it out on the animal after the event is not going to cut it at all.
Perhaps it’s the neighbor’s beloved household pet or scary guard dog that is causing you this problem. So why not just go over and tell him in no uncertain terms to make the darned dog stop, or else… Bad idea? You bet.
If it is your dog, or your neighbor’s – the good news is that there are solutions. Some work rather fast, while other might take a little longer to be effective. And that’s the purpose of these pages: to show you how you can find solutions in order to stop barking dogs now – and hopefully gain more respect and admiration in the process.
