How To Deal With Excessive Dog Barking

Dealing With Excessive Barking

dog barking at other dogsMost of us usually don’t mind it when our dogs bark. Other people just hate it. We have to understand that barking is normal, but when they bark too much, now that can be really irritating.

First, you need to know that there are several different kinds of dog barking.

One is play alert barking. This is usually when a dog sees and wants something but can’t get to it, such as a toy that is out of reach, or a cat or squirrel up a tree. Or maybe he wants to play with you and is trying to get you to notice him.

Then you have what is called learned barking. This is the how dogs try to get your attention when they need to do certain things, such as barking to be let out of the house and to be let in again, barking in order to be fed, or when something is wrong, like when they hear a sound outside the house.

The third is boredom barking. Some dogs whine, bark or howl when they are bored and have nothing to do. This kind of barking is repetitive and usually directed at nothing, and downright irritating.

Dog language is different from human language, so it is up to you to interpret what your dog is trying to say. Sometimes it will depend on the breed; some dogs were bred to bark only when there is a threat, such as Rottweilers, Dobermans and German Shepherds. Some breeds like Beagles and Bloodhounds were trained to assist their masters in a task such as hunting, and bark in order to call attention when they spot a quarry.

Suppose you are working at home, or reading a book on the couch, and your dog starts barking because she wants to play. There are times when you would not mind playing, but right now you would rather continue with what you are doing. To deal with dog barking, say ‘Quiet!’ in a commanding tone to your dog, then ignore her. If she follows you and stops, praise her with a spoken ‘Good girl!’ and maybe a treat.

Giving the dog the cold shoulder will teach her to realize that even if she wants something, if you do not want it too her barking will not have any effect.

dog barking behavior modificationOr maybe you are out walking in the park together, and your dog starts barking at the sight of a squirrel on a tree branch. Command your dog ‘Quiet!’ to start, then wait for a few seconds. If she does continues barking, gently yank the dog collar to call her attention. If she stops, praise her. If she still continues, do the sequence again.

Reinforce your authority on the dog, but always remember not to hurt her when pulling on her collar or leash. Also, be consistent with your actions. Do not praise her just to have her stop barking.

If your dog barks to be let out of the house but you would rather not have her bark, then you will have to find some alternative solution where you need not be disturbed. Remember, the dog will have to pee or poo sometime, and you probably do not want her to do it inside the house. Consider having a swinging dog door put in so that she will not need to disturb you. Feed her at regular scheduled hours so she will not be hungry. Make sure she always has an ample supply of water to drink.

If your dog is barking for no reason at all, maybe she is not getting enough exercise. Consider taking her for a short walk at least once a day, it will certainly make a difference. If you do not have the time to do this, think about hiring a dog walker. Anything is better than a constantly whining dog in the house.

Or, perhaps you do not spend enough time with your dog and she is left to herself most of the time. Dogs are social animals just like us, and just like us they need attention, interaction, and communication. Giving your dog more attention when you are at home will make a difference. Try it and see.
